Indy, Continued

We counted ourselves to be very happily out of Bennett's (2-year) phase of being a fussy traveler. Our last time traveling with him left us feeling a little anxious about how these two flights would go, but we were pleasantly surprised. He napped a little, and for the rest of it, we were mostly able to keep him occupied with only a few moments of fussiness. June was a great little traveler. We got some time with her reading books and doing stickers before we succumbed to the iPad. :)

Grammy and Papaw Fred's house is so fun because they have all these new toys to play with. New to the kids, of course, old in actuality because they used to be Michael and Lauren's toys as kids! Including Michael's old recorder, which Bennett loved because he pretends everything is a trumpet, and this pretend trumpet actually made sounds! Papa John would be so proud!

The kids slept together in the same room, which was A.DOR.ABLE.

They were so cute and got into relatively little mischief about the whole thing. Only one nap was circumvented altogether because they wouldn't go down. Each morning June would give us a run-down of how the night and morning had gone, including a few mornings when she woke up to find Bennett sleeping on the floor. Definitely reminded me that we're not quite ready for Bennett to be in a big boy bed (he's still happily in his crib).

One night the kids started crying  in the middle of the night - I think it was June having a bad dream and Bennett just being scared of her crying. Anyway, Michael and I both bolted upright and ran in their room, where I found Bennett standing up near the door. Nearly gave me a heart attack to almost barrel over him like that!

Michael and I had a date night! We had the best meal I've had in a long time at St. Elmo's Steakhouse, then walking around to the nightlife district for drinks and dessert.

We headed over to Danville for the day to visit Grandma Helen. We took her out to lunch at Steak & Shake (the kids got the milkshakes that I had been talking up) with Uncle Mike and Perry, then headed over to Uncle Mike's house for some relaxation and playing before the drive back to Indy.

And there was a lot of lounge time with the family, enjoying being together.

I love this picture of the whole group, courtesy of the self-timer!

It was a great trip!

The Indy 500!

While we were in Indy, we were so lucky to get to go to the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500 race! Michael had a connection through work who offered him tickets in a suite in the pagoda, that big structure in the background below. I can't tell you how lucky we felt and how excited we were to get to experience the race this way! (Judy was so sweet to offer to have some 1-on-1 time with Bennett while the rest of us went to the race.)

While we were walking in, they wheeled the huge trophy past so I snapped a quick picture.

We invited my Uncle Mike and cousin Perry to join us, and loved getting to see them and share in the experience with them.

There was a covered patio area to watch, which was awesome to be outside but protected from that intense sun, and get the full experience of those super-loud cars.

There were drinks and snacks inside...which June kept inquiring about and needing to taste.

We were outside for the start of the race and all of the components leading up to it, like the National Anthem and the singing of "Back Home Again in Indiana."

There was also an inside area where we could sit down, protected from the noise a little and still with an incredible view.

This was definitely a day for the books!

Visiting Mimi and Tom

On one day of our visit, we headed out to visit Mimi and Tom at their lovely house on a lake. We got to spend some great time with them, enjoying good food and exploring their fun house and back yard.

Mimi is so sweet and had bought some books and toys for the kids to play with.

June and Papaw Fred spent some time building a race car:

The kids did NOT want to leave in the end, but luckily Mimi had set us up with some cookies for the drive home for some prime bribing material! :)

Then we stopped at Steak & Shake on the way home! I am happy to announce that, by the end of our trip, the kids started chanting the name of the restaurant whenever they saw it!

Blissful Days in the Backyard

When I look back on this trip to Indianapolis, I think one of the things I'll picture most is the time we spent in the back yard. It was such a quintessential summertime-visiting-grandma feeling - the kids running through sprinklers, watering the plants, playing with bubbles, being chased by Papaw Fred.

I sat on the patio, with either a coffee or glass of wine in my hand, and enjoyed watching them play.
